Top Ten Books of 2016 - June to December

So we've reached the end of the year and according to Goodreads I've read 231 books (131 more than my mid year look), including novellas, putting me just over my goal of 125 books being read in 2016.

Of these extra 131 books, I've decided to give myself the painstaking task of picking my top ten, no series or joint numbers, just the ten books that I've enjoyed the most this year. I'm going to focus on new to me more than new in general but that may not be the case, let's find out!

Next post will merge the two lists - be ready to find out my number one book of the year!!
(Purchase link on book title, Goodreads /Author Website on Author Name)

Royally Screwed (Royally, #1)     Emma Chase's books are always a delight. This series is quite different from the lawyers and investment bankers we have all got used to in terms of occupation at least. Prince Nicholas is an adorable character and Olivia is everything you would want in a heroine.

What I loved most about this book is how much it made me laugh and how it made me fall so deeply for the characters. I'm so excited for the next two books already.

Your Inescapable Love (The Bennett Family #4)I've already reviewed this book here!
To recap:

  • I'm so in love with the Bennett family
  • Max was adorable
  • Emilia is amazing
  • Second chance romances are always worth the time, especially if they're lucky enough to have been written by Layla Hagen!

In Ruins (Something More, #1)Danielle Pearl makes beautiful books. I knew it when I'd finished Normal and realised that the characters had made their way deep into my heart and book mind.
In Ruins doesn't buck the trend, whilst I was upset that Carl and Tucker would need a second chance romance, it was just so beautiful. I literally could have never guessed this story and I'm so glad that Danielle took the time to write it

The Accidental Life Of Greg MillarThis amazing book has already reviewed by me so just a quick recap and a note. Aimee Alexander/Denise Deegan has been writing books that are so important to me for a while now.
In keeping with not wanting to spoil the very important surprise, all I can say is that we need to learn to accept people for all of who they are.
Anyway, on to the recap:

  • Characters are delightful
  • The romance is adorable
  • The story is essential

Someone like You (Oxford, #3)The long awaited Lincoln book. Does not disappoint.
Lincoln has been charming us all for so long I was genuinely worried that after all the anticipation he could disappoint. So, I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to Lauren Layne for ever, ever doubting her after all she's done for me.
Not only did she gift us with the perfect book and characters, she also announced that she's expanding the series so at least I have one thing to look forward to in the potential garbage year that could be 2017.

Wait for ItFun fact: this is also my favourite Hamilton song but that isn't why I love it (the themes are actually quite similar, it's eerie).
Mariana Zapata is a new find for me this year and she has honestly not disappointed. Wait For It follows the generic Zapata formula of moody male and slow burn romance and yet with each book, she lets us know that she knows her characters; whilst the stories are the same, it's the characters that make each story come alive and have you rooting for them from the bottom of your heart.

Additionally: bonus pop ups from former books!

A Bloody Kingdom (Ruthless People #4)J.J. McAvoy's Ruthless People is most comparable to a TV show like Scorpion. Are you fully aware that these people are doing near impossible and highly ridiculous things? Yes. Do you care? Absolutely not.

So this book is the real ending to Ruthless People as J.J. just couldn't let me be happy and stress free. It's really a rollercoaster ride that I'm not only happy to have got on, but would continue to get on over and over again.

Melody and Liam are a dream as always.

If you like your heroines crazy with fight, this series is for you.

Consolation Prize (Forbidden Men, #9)We first met little Colton when he was maybe 5? and next thing you know he's 18 and breaking hearts and taking names, as is the family tradition.
Consolation Prize follows Linda Kage delving into interracial relationships. Colton is obviously white but Julianna is black. The story is strong already, but following the real issues that can occur from these relationships only served to make the book better and more realistic.
The last book will be going back to Mason and Reese so I would like to thank Linda for giving me the wonderful Gamble family, from Noel right down to Colton.

2) LUCAS BY JAY MCLEAN - 5 stars
Lucas (Preston Brothers, #1)Lucas is one of those weird books where everybody makes terrible decisions but you leave them to it because they've already endeared themselves to you so you're just like "look at my children making their trash decisions because they don't have me to guide them"
I fell in love with Lucas (the book) and also Lucas the character. Lanie however was the character that I felt really brought the book home.
As readers, most of us already knew Lucas from the More Than Series so Lanie was not only a new perspective on the crazy Preston family, but through her we also got to meet the Preston's mum.

Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass, #5)If you saw my Empire of Storms post you probably thought I'd said all I could say about this series...WRONG!

This is a series that continuously BLOWS MY MIND, even with things I already know are coming. Never in my life did I think I would love Manon as much as I did when I read her first ever chapter. Manon and all the Blackbeaks are just amazing. Aelin has obviously been with us since book one, I love her more and more each book. Aedion was my own personal gift and I love him so much. Lysandra has the biggest heart. Dorian is Dorian. Sarah J. Maas is still my best bet to plan a murder that she could get away with cos all she does is plot and plan.
...and I still have no feelings for Rowan bye.

Hit The Spot by J. Daniels Excerpt

His reputation as a player is almost as legendary as his surfing skills. No matter how her body heats up when he's around, she's determined not to be another meaningless hookup. Jamie McCade always gets what he wants. The sickest wave. The hottest women. And Tori, with her long legs and smart mouth, is definitely the hottest one. He knows Tori wants him-hell, most women do-but she won't admit it. After months of chasing and one unforgettable kiss, it's time for Jamie to raise the stakes. Jamie promises that soon Tori won't just want him in her bed, she'll be begging for it-and he might be right. Somehow he's found the spot in her heart that makes her open up like never before. But with all she knows about his past, can she really trust what's happening between them? Is Jamie playing for keeps or just playing to win? This book can be read as a stand-alone. Book 1--Four Letter Word

Hammerjacks was dimly lit and packed with bodies, some dancing together and others crowding the bar, waiting to get served. I started scanning the room as I came up beside Tori, who was doing the same even though she had no idea who she was looking for. I saw Quinn almost instantly. She wasn’t hard to spot. The bright pink spiked-out hair helped with that. “There,” I said, pointing in the direction of the bar where my sister was sitting on a stool, head turned away from the group of shitheads swarming her. She was alone. That pissed me off. She was here, in town visiting, and she was looking for ass. That pissed me off, too. Not much I could do about the second thing, I understood it, but she was gonna hear my feelings toward the other whether she wanted to hear them or not. “What’s her name again?” Tori asked as we made our way over. “Quinn,” I said. She nodded, face serious. Then she tucked stray pieces of hair behind her ears and smoothed out the rest of her pony, pulled the one sleeve of her shirt down so it exposed her shoulder and bra strap, straightened her spine, tipped her chin up, and put on a smile before rushing ahead. “Hey, sweetie. Sorry I’m late,” Tori chirped, squeezing in between my sister and the shitheads as if they weren’t standing there. She grabbed Quinn’s face, bent down, and kissed her cheek. “I missed you. Did you miss me?” she asked, bringing both hands to Quinn’s neck and holding there while standing between her bent knees. Tori was smiling and playing the part, leaning close and making it seem like they were really together, or at least really feeling each other. My sister was blinking up at Tori, looking baffled but also looking like she was wanting to buy everything Legs was selling. I wasn’t surprised. Quinn shared my taste in women. And I definitely had a taste for Legs. “Whoa, are you two…damn. Is this your girl?” one of the shitheads asked from behind Tori, pointing at the back of her. “Jesus,” another one chimed in, looking his fill. “What are the chances of me watchin’ you two go at it? This is fuckin’ hot.” I stepped up then, not liking the tone of this guy and the shit coming out of his mouth, and wanting to make my presence known. He saw me approach and shot me a hard look, asking, “You gotta problem?” “Jamie.” Teeth clenched and fists forming, I looked to Quinn, not taking the bait he was throwing out. She was watching me, eyes serious and mouth tight, subtly shaking her head in warning ’cause she knew I couldn’t be fighting or doing anything that could draw negative attention. Then she turned her attention onto Tori when she twisted and slid into Quinn’s lap. “Fishing in the wrong pond, boys,” Tori informed them, sweeping her gaze over the three while putting her arm around Quinn’s shoulders and pressing close. “Get lost. We’re not interested.” Then she turned all of her attention onto my sister and amped up her game, giggling as she kept her face close to hers and running her fingers through her hair, smiling, whispering, really flirting and looking into it, all while blocking the view of the shitheads so they couldn’t watch. And everything Legs was doing, my sister was eating up. Wrapping her arms around Tori and holding on to her, smiling back, laughing, looking like she was falling in love and thinking this was real and something sustainable. I was starting to regret incorporating Tori into this plan. She was a little too good at her game. Straight up. Maybe the best at it. I was also starting to get mildly jealous watching my sister getting attention from the one woman who was hell-bent on ignoring my ass. “Man, whatever,” the one guy said, grabbing his beer and looking to his friends. “Come on. I’m not wastin’ my time on lesbian pussy.” His friends murmured their agreement, mentioned something about hitting up Roy’s, a bar down the street, then grabbed their beers and stepped away. When they were out of earshot, I shifted my eyes to Legs, telling her, “Think you sold it. You can get off my sister now.” Tori smiled proudly, lifting her shoulders with a little dance. Then she looked to Quinn, keeping the smile, and said, “Hey, I’m Tori. Your brother dragged me here, so I figured I’d offer my assistance instead of letting him handle it, since he can’t fight and all.” “Can fight, just shouldn’t,” I corrected her. I jerked my chin. “Hop off.” Quinn moved her hands up Tori’s back and licked her lips. “Wicked plan,” my sister told her. “I was totally into that.” “I think it got the point across,” Tori replied. “I really like your hair, by the way.” She ran her fingers through it again. “The color looks great on you.” “Really?” “Absolutely. It really makes your eyes pop.” “I was thinking about going purple…” “Have you tried bleaching the roots and just painting the color on the ends? I think that would look amazing with purple.” Jesus. “Legs,” I barked. Both of their heads whipped around and faced my direction. “You feelin’ like gettin’ up so we can get the fuck outta here?” I asked, thinking only about the food back at her place I was wanting to eat and not about how comfortable my sister’s hands looked gripping on to Tori’s body. “She’s fine,” Quinn offered, keeping her hands locked around Legs. “Really. She doesn’t have to move.” I shot a glare at Quinn, communicating how I felt about that suggestion, then shifted that glare to Tori. “I was getting up. Relax. We were just talking,” she huffed, moving off Quinn’s lap and coming to stand beside me. “You’re welcome, by the way,” she murmured.

Do you ever read a book and plays out like you're watching a movie? You can see it all so clearly in your head and you're loving everything about it?

That's how Hit The Spot managed to hit the spot ;) [I'm sure she hasn't heard that one yet, sorry!] We'd already met Jamie and Tori in Four Letter Word but is there anything better than an enemies to lovers book (rarely!)? It's definitely in my top 2 tropes if not my favourite trope of all time and this book executed it perfectly.

In Four Letter Word we see Jamie hit on Tori daily and Tori insult him and retaliate by violating multiple health and safety rules but the moment I knew I was going to love this couple and story with all my heart involves a friendly bout of vandalism. I promise I do believe in the law but it was just so swoon worthy and Tori agreed with me.

This story lets us see more about both characters and that's what I love about series, no matter how much you may know about a character when they're a supporting one, it never beats what you get to learn about them from their point of view or the point of view of their other half.

Displaying IMG_4825.JPG

Tori was already a kick ass character but the second I got to read from her POV I was like "yes, this is exactly the type of character I can root for!" and the same happened with Jamie and so it's no surprise these two were/are made for each other.

Plot wise I thought it followed a really good story throughout and I loved the slight switching of the "gender roles" we tend to see a lot of in contemporary romances.

I picked up my first J. Daniels book earlier this year and whilst I'm sad I'm all caught up, I'm very excited to be able to keep coming back!

I couldn't believe how weak I was becoming just from one little phone call. I tried to breathe; I tried to remind myself that he had no control over me. I tried to reassure myself that I would be okay and that he wasn't in my life anymore. But no matter what I told myself, I could feel my mind spiraling out of control. Questions overtook my mind. What if he tried to come after me? What if he was already here just waiting? What if? What if? Why had I even answered the phone? "You better have been or it won't be good." He huffed into the phone right before it cut out. I switched my phone to silent and placed it face down on the floor. I closed my eyes and tried to pull myself together. My arms were shaking and I knew tears were threatening my eyes.
